It struck me randomly today while at work that the problem I’ve run into in recent years is lack of time to do what I used to do, but the reason for that is the obligation I created for myself.
For example, if I were to commit to covering Alaska Golf Association golf tournaments for the summer, it means I must be there at each event, conduct interviews and so on. The process of driving to the course alone is an hour out of my busy day, which is often enough reason for me to forget it.
I used to play in the tournaments, so I was already at the event. What was an extra hour afterward to track down interviews and then go home and write for an hour or two? I no longer have time to play in the golf tournaments, so covering them becomes this day-long activity that is impossible to fit in my schedule.
As a result, I end up abandoning the whole thing, because I don’t feel I can live up to the obligation. I’ve been looking at it like I would a job to be completed. This has to change.
I’ve got to start looking at my writing as something I do for enjoyment, whenever I have time. I can’t write for others anymore, as though they are expecting me to cover an event. I must write for me and allow people to read it if they wish. If they don’t, I can’t afford to take the time to care.
I have a couple of slower months approaching through the Holidays. There will be time to write. I can even write about last summer’s golf tournaments, just not the way a traditional beat reporter would.
So, I’ll see what inspiration strikes me and have fun with this.
