JJ steps backward

My pursuit of golf greatness with no practice took a nose dive last week. I only got to play once and did not touch a club in eight days, since shooting my round of the year.

Though I did hit some amazing shots, including one I consider my best shot of the year, my round was a horrendous 92. I couldn’t keep the ball out of the trees on the back nine, not on one hole. Other than that, I played well.

The culprit was a little casual approach to my swing, in which I allowed myself to use the hands as a hinge in the golf swing. This is something that feels really good to me, allows me to hit all kinds of fun shots, but the minute I put a wood in my hands, off-target shots ensue.

Does this mean, as I’ve suspected for years that one must approach short shots one way and tee shots another way? I’ll be putting it to the test the next time I get out. The forecast this week is 50 degrees and rainy, all week, so it may be a while.
