Weather and work prevented me from my goal of playing two rounds this past week, but I did play one. I didn’t practice at all for eight days, didn’t even warm up at the driving range before the round and shot 78, seven shots better than my previous best round of the year.
This is partly due to course conditions getting better as we enter July, the second of our three-month season. I played at Anchorage Golf Course and it was in wonderful shape. It’s only going to get better, of course, and I’m excited about that.
I didn’t strike the ball the best of my five or six rounds of 2026, but I missed it straight most of the time. I made an eagle on the par-5 ninth hole to cap an even-par front nine and shot six over on the back. I report this for quantification purposes only.
Evaluation of my game is that everything from tee to green is on the right track. I have no need to practice at a driving range ever again. I may use them to warm up from time to time before rounds, but that’s about it.
I am scheduled to play one round next week. My goal is to shoot 65 by the end of August, with no practice. I think that would suffice to prove I’ve truly figured out how to play great golf.
Bear in mind the courses I’m playing, Alaskan conditions aside, are relatively short and easy, like the average local municipal courses sprinkled around the country. Scottie Scheffler would shoot 55 on a good day, no kidding.
